Places

Im spending a bit of time in York at the moment doing general tourist-ey things like museums and sight seeing so I thought it would be as good a place as ever to start on learning a bit of history about the place, and it has quite an interesting history with Vikings and torture etc!

I recently went to the York Dungeons to find out some history of the city and some grim stories. Aside from various tortures adopted by York in medieval times the biggest story was Guy Fawkes who originated from York.

York is the only city in the UK that still has most of its stone city walls that were built by Romans in the 1500's! there is a walk around the perimeter of the city that has plaques with some history of the city:

This is the route of the walls.
The walls have been in the same place for 2000 years, originally built by the romans. the material that is there today is from the 1600's when they were rebuilt

The type used for 'cuty walls' is based on medieval masons marks

In Fishergate Tower we got shown around a traditional living area for the soldiers that would be guarding the walls, where there was also a toilet! which ties in nicely with my research into useful inventions, this is a very basic toilet which is essentially just a hole.

This is the staircase which was extremely narrow

This plaque had some beautiful type! it is saying that this portion of the wall was restored in 1889 by Edwin Gray

Apparently this gate has been here since AD 71?

Off topic but I thought that this menu was rather good!
